ON OUR DOORSTEP
Skye Getaways’ accommodation is enviably placed in an elevated position above the village of Dunvegan so affording excellent views and a rural location with a very short walk to reach the facilities of the small and friendly village. In Dunvegan you will find a well-stocked village store, a bakery, a fruit and vegetable shop as well as a post office and petrol station. There are several cafes and restaurants, offering a wide selection of eat-in and take away options for snacks and meals.
A stay in Dunvegan for many means a visit to Dunvegan Castle, the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, which has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. In the summer season they also offer seal boat trips to really get up close to the colony of seals that live in the loch. This is only about a mile away from the apartments, through the village.
For a unique and quirky experience then the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum is only a short walk from the accommodation.
Even without getting in the car there are good options for local walks from our accommodation, including around the edges of Loch Dunvegan. A walk to the Millenium Stone, erected by the local community in 2000, gives you an amazing view over the village and across the sea and to the Cuillins and MacLeods Tables.
CORAL BEACH
DUNVEGAN CASTLE
NEARBY
We think it is worth really taking some time to explore Skye and just to breathe in the endless views, slower pace of life and warm hospitality of the community. Most people visiting Skye want to see some of the well-known beauty-spots such as Coral Beach, Neist Point, the Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Fairy Pools. These all offer an amazing experience and are easy to drive to from our holiday homes but we also think that taking some time to see places that are less well known is worth your attention and we are happy to share ideas.
There are walks to suit all timescales and abilities – the Cuillin Hills offer unlimited challenging options for those with good walking gear and a sense of adventure. Coastal walks are many and varied, with around 400 miles of irregular coastline on Skye meandering around sea lochs. We are lucky to have our accommodation very close indeed to a length of coast widely regarded as one of the most beautiful anywhere, with great views to MacLeods Maidens. You may spot sea eagles or golden eagles soaring overhead or see seals, dolphins or otters around the coast.
Skye Getaways’ accommodation is enviably placed for those who want to explore local crafts – the Duirinish peninsula to the West and Waternish peninsula to the North of Dunvegan have an incredible selection of artists and craftspeople, including Skye Weavers, Skye Silver and Skyeskyns.
If a holiday tipple is your thing then a trip to visit Talisker Distillery is a great option for a tour and a wee dram.
FOOD AND DRINK
When you fancy taking a break from cooking for yourself, we think we must have the best location in Skye for our choice of restaurants.
Many of our guests choose at some point in their stay to eat at Atholl House and the Old School restaurant which are both just a 5 minute walk away. We are situated right in the middle of 3 of the most acclaimed fine dining restaurants in Scotland – the Three Chimneys, Edinbane Lodge and the Michelin starred Loch Bay Restaurant. Each are 10-20 minutes’ drive away.
There are also many other cafes and restaurants that are in the village or a short drive away and we are always happy to recommend a place depending on your preferences. Advance booking is always advisable for dinner.
